Biography
Born and raised in Cairo, Egypt, Sonia came to the United States to do post-graduate work in Hotel Management and Tourism Marketing at Cornell University. After a twenty-year career of full-time work in the hotel and tourism industry in the U. S. and overseas, Sonia started her private consulting practice. She works with International Agencies that assist countries in using tourism as a means of economic development. In recent years, she has devoted more time to cultivate her interest in art by taking art courses and workshops. She has studied with Andrea Burchette, Deborah Souders, Robin Young, Jeanne Dobie, Carolyn Buchanon, and Joe Mayer. She has taken watercolor workshops in France, Greece, and Mexico. Now, Sonia combines her international tourism consulting work with her watercolor painting. Sonia's painting have been exhibited in a number of regional art shows and galleries. She exhibits her original paintings and selected prints at her studio, which is open to the public six times a year as an open house. To receive an invitation to the open houses, please sign our Guest book. In the past five years, over 400 of her paintings have been acquired by collectors in 20 states, and 11 countries. Sonia's watercolors have been juried by a number of national and regional art jurors, and have received a number of awards for best watercolor in group exhibits. Mrs. Maher's watercolors have the spontaneity of impressionism. The subjects of her paintings include nature, landscapes, and some of the many foreign lands that she enjoys visiting. Sonia and her husband have made their home in Frederick County, Maryland. Her studio is located in the rolling countryside between Jefferson and Middletown.
