Biography

What was previously a pastime was hoped to lead toward a dream of painting watercolors on commission while living in Nova Scotia.  Valerie has been painting watercolors off and on since the late 1960's.  Starting off primarily painting simple and small sized pictures of flowers, she is now expanding her base into compositions and other challenging subject mater.

In addition to compliments from friends, Valerie's artistic direction was fostered by an opportunity that came about while living  in Europe.  In the early 1980's she contributed some illustrations for a children's book, Valerie added the subtle detail which enhanced the illustrations and which stood out to the client.  She developed a sense of detail and increased her painting skill as she painted more.

Having never taken formal training in watercolor techniques, Valerie has developed a unique style over time, which is characterized by her attention to detail and color and use of space.  It's frequently commented that Valerie's style is different from the traditional watercolorist, using a very dry brush, she is able to achieve pencil point detail with a number of her pieces.  In addition, Valerie uses a wide array of color mixed to achieve effects for shadowing, distance, foreground and background scale.  Even though she has experimented with other media, she has always returned to watercolors.

She has not focused on a single subject matter but she has painted a number of pictures of flowers.  She especially enjoys painting roses, pansies, tulips and irises.  She is currently interested in painting Europe after having lived there for four years.  Valerie has accumulated subject mater from all of western Europe including Castles, Monasteries, and Cathedrals.

Valerie was born in the Midwest.  She left Michigan and moved to Colorado where she married her husband of 20 years.  Valerie became a member of the Frederick County Art Association in Frederick Maryland in 1999 and has displayed her work in membership shows.

All of Valerie's work is original.  She does not produce any copies or reprints.
