BIOGRAPHY

Sandy Cook is a Maryland native and a graduate of the University of Maryland.  Most of her childhood and adult life was spent in Anne Arundel County famed for all its waterways, Annapolis and the Naval Academy.  This environment also sparked a keen interest in art  and the fine details found in small microcosms.  Accordingly, most of her art focuses into the smallness of a scene rather than the landscape.  Converting the feeling of textures such as wood, organic, water, and fabric into the smoothness of an oil painting is the goal of most of her work.

She works in the style of the old masters, usually beginning with the value under painting and finishing with layers of glaze.  However, sometimes she breaks loose with impressionistic flowers and lots of color.  You never know what her subject will be because it is usually the challenge of one small detail in a scene that sparks the painting.

Sandy sold her first painting while in high school, and was truly amazed that anyone would pay for a picture.  Actually, she thought that everyone could paint and draw, they just chose not to do it.  This naiveté resulted in many years of artwork that was never exhibited.  However, during the 1970s she by chance gained the acquaintance of a well known local Anne Arundel artist who owned "The Barn," a local studio where artists gathered.  Mentored, and matured she started creating an expanding collection with focus and direction.

Soon after moving to Carroll County, Maryland in 1990 she promptly got involved in the Carroll County Arts Council serving on the Board of Directors for two years,  She currently is deeply involved in the Carroll County Artists Gild serving as membership chairperson and treasurer. in the past she served two terms as President, and served on committees to further expand the arts in Carroll County.  Sandy currently is the editor of "Artyfacts" a monthly news letter.  Sandy has served on the Women in The Arts Exhibition committee, and juried that event held at the Carroll Community College. She is a former member of the Delaplaine Center and the Hanover Art

Her works have been exhibited in private establishment, public galleries, and government offices.  She is currently represented by the Gallery at Yesteryear in Mount Airy Maryland.
