Biography

A lifelong artist, Peter remembers being picked to paint a picture of an airplane in kindergarten. He completed a painting of a four-engine Constellation airliner! His formal training didn’t begin until age 13, with a summer painting class offered by the local recreation department. While attending high school in Wheaton, MD, Peter was fortunate to take the first art class offered at the school. It made him think about art as a career.

It was on to the University of Dayton for his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with concentrations in painting and printmaking. After graduation Peter began his career as a graphic artist while working at a firm in Gaithersburg. Graphics occupied his time for 19 years, 14 of which were spent as a self-employed freelancer.

Since marrying Kim in 1981, they have lived in Frederick County, MD, first outside of Frederick, and for the last 17 years in Middletown.

Peter has found the Frederick County area very conducive to inspiring his creative urges. "The landscape is so beautiful – and historic – that I can’t help but be inspired to create art", he says. "I love the blue mountains in the distance, and the Potomac River through the trees along the C & O Canal towpath."

But really Peter could be creative anywhere, for it is light which intrigues him the most. Bright light from above as seen through the leaves of a dense forest; the reflection of rocks and trees in the water; and the rays of the sun which take on a variety of hues behind and around clouds during the morning and evening hours: these all are incentives to create.

For the last nine years Peter has expanded and changed to try another kind of art – the art of teaching. Currently working at Waters Landing Elementary School in Germantown, MD, Peter teaches about 550 students a week. It is the love of art which causes him to take on such a task, a love which he endeavors to pass on to another generation.

His work allows him time to apply his creative energies to landscapes and other art in colored pencil, acrylics, and watercolor.
